Important Dates/Information

May 8 – MAP testing- Please have students arrive to school on time. Make sure they rest well the night before and have a full breakfast.

May 1 – Western North Carolina Nature Center field trip. Students may wear jeans, TJ shirt and athletic shoes. Pack disposable bagged lunch with name on it.

May 2- TJ Dine Night at Fatz 5-9pm

May 2 – Field day shirt orders due

CKLA Skills Unit 6

Spelling Words: nose, winner, kneel, running, nugget, center, knit, which, whales, whimpers
The Reader for this unit is called Grace, and is about a girl named Grace who lives on a farm in the Midwest.  The stories in this reader take students through Grace’s daily life on the farm and in the country.

The following sounds and spellings will be reviewed or introduced in this unit:

CKLA Skills Unit 7

The Reader for this unit is called Kay and Martez.  It focuses on a young girl, Kay, and her friendship with a Mexican-American boy named Martez.  In the second half of the Reader, Kay, Martez, and Kay’s family for on a trip to Mexico.

During Unit 7, students will:

Chapter 19 – Money

Students will:

Investigate money.
Learn the value of coins (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter).
Count money amounts shown with coins within one dollar.
Learn the value of $10 and $5 bills.
Count bills and coins up to $20.
Solve problems involving money.
Add or subtract money in dollars and cents.
Practice counting money.
Listening & Learning: Frontier Explorers

In this domain, students will learn about the American frontier and the explorers that played an important role in the westward expansion of the United States.  Students will be introduced to key people and events that played a role in the early westward expansion of the United States.  They will first review the development of the thirteen colonies and the Revolutionary War.  They will hear how the first English colonists settled along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.  As more people migrated to the colonies, and by the time of the Revolutionary War, the line of the frontier moved all the way to the Appalachian Mountains.  Students will learn that the Appalachian Mountains were difficult to traverse and acted as a barrier to the colonists who wanted to settle farther west.  Students will be introduced to Daniel Boone and the role he played in westward expansion, specifically his role in the creation of the Wilderness Road.Students will then hear about the presidency of Thomas Jefferson.  Students will learn about how Jefferson enabled the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France, moving the line of the frontier all the way to the Rocky Mountains.  Students will hear about Lewis and Clark’s explorations of the Louisiana Territory and about the three reasons why President Jefferson commissioned the exploration of the new land. (to find an all water route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean; to make contact with various native American tribes; and to record the geography and wildlife of the Louisiana Territory) Students will also be introduced to Sacagawea and her role in the expedition.  By the end of the domain, students should have a good understanding of the concept of the westward expansion and how it contributed to the growth of the United States, as well as the key people involved.

Lewis and Clark –  traveled to the Pacific Ocean looking for an all water route, led the Corps of Discovery, recorded plants and animals in their journals
