AVONDALE —

Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) is one of the most challenging high schools in the nation.

The Washington Post released its Most Challenging High Schools List this week and TJCA ranks 134 out of 2,327(CORRECTION:134/22,000) public high schools. The school is also ranked second in North Carolina.

“I am pleased that our students here in rural western North Carolina have taken on the challenge of the many Advanced Placement courses we offer,” said Joe Maimone, the school’s headmaster. “This has led to significant scholarships and college credits earned for our students.”

The schools scores were calculated by the number of college-level tests given at a school in the previous year divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career.

“This award is a tribute to the strength of our classical curriculum, the talent of our faculty, the dedication of our parents and the hard work of our students,” said Jeff Ziegler, the school’s academic dean.

Last year, TJCA ranked 161 in the nation and 8th in North Carolina.
